Lesotho Blasts EU for Seeking Zimbabwe Sanctions

July 9, 2008

Lesotho Prime Minister Pakalitha Mosisili on Wednesday blasted European Union countries that are calling for economic sanctions to be imposed on Zimbabwe as having double standards for Africa and elsewhere.

Addressing local media at his offices on Wednesday, Mosisili said while other countries, particularly Europeans, are calling for economic sanctions against the Zimbabwe government, he believes that Zimbabweans can resolve their own differences.

”They are hell-bent on causing confusion and do not have the best interests of Zimbabwe, while we, as the Southern African Development Community (SADC), are doing all we can to find a lasting solution in that country,” he remarked.

Mosisili added that SADC was fully aware of such threats, adding that on its resolutions on Zimbabwe SADC had appealed to other states and all parties concerned to refrain from any action that might negatively impact on the climate of dialogue.

Speaking on the African Union (AU), he said African leaders have proposed to adopt the European Union (EU) model of government, as opposed to the United States of America, where sovereign states will remain independent and not have a central government like that of the United States.

He said the stand of the AU towards a United States of Africa is that, although they believe that there is no turning back in the process, some of them agreed that communities should not be left behind.

Mosisili expressed the need to first strengthen regional economic cooperation and interregional infrastructure for smooth trade.

“We should consult our communities on issues of that magnitude in case we are accused of selling our sovereign states,” he stressed.

Speaking about soaring food and fuel prices, the Prime Minister attributed this hike to climate change that has affected food production and has resulted in severe droughts and frost which damages crops.

He said the government is working towards increasing its annual budget on agriculture to increase food security.
