Eight Lesotho farmers from the capital Maseru and three neighboring districts of Berea, Leribe and Mafeteng have been selected to grow a special sorghum for beer production in the country.
The director of corporate affairs for the Lesotho Brewing Company (LBC), Ntahli Matete, said the farmers were expected to grow the special sorghum for beer which the company will buy after next year’s harvest season.
He said the seeds for the sorghum beer have been experimented and proved to be suitable for Lesotho’s climate and production of beer in Lesotho at the University of Pretoria in South Africa.
The arrangement follows a partnership entered into by farmers and the LBC, which is an affiliate of SABMiller brewery, whose headquarters is based in London (UK).
The same sorghum is grown in other African countries, where SABMiller has operations, which include Uganda, Tanzania and Zambia.
