Liberia’s Ruling Unity Party to Sue Ex-warlord for Lying About President Ellen Sirleaf
August 10, 2008
The ruling Unity Party of of President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf has threatened court action against “Jesus” Alieu Swaray for claiming he saw President Sirleaf in military uniform along with former rebel leader Charles Taylor, inspecting rebel forces in northeastern Nimba County in 1990.
The Secretary General of the Party, Henty Fahnbulleh described Swaray’s claims a ’pack of lies’ intended to besmear the image of President Johnson Sirleaf.
He wondered how Alieu who was a founding member of the defunct ULIMO-K warring faction was able to enter the erstwhile NPFL controlled territory at a time when the NPFL did not spare persons who bore names like his.
Mr. Fahnbullen warned Swaray that the Unity Party would institute court against him if he fails to produce evidence to back his claim in 48 hours.
On Friday evening, President Sirleaf denied Swaray’s claim, and hoped the Truth and Reconciliation Commission would not degenerate into a forum where people would lie about perceived enemies with impunity.
