The second technical video conference between Liberia and the European Union on a voluntary partnership Agreement (VPA) regarding Forest Law Enforcement, Governance and Trade (FLEGT) was held on Tuesday in the Liberian capital Monrovia.
The VPA aims to promote sustainable forest management by addressing the problem of illegal logging in Liberia, and promoting legally-harvested and sustainable Liberia forest products on European markets.
A press release issued here late Tuesday says a key part of the agreement will be a licensing system that assures that exported timber products have been legally produced.
“Processes for verification of legal production and tracking products from forest to exports, as well as the monitoring to guarantee credibility of the system, need to be developed. Where possible, these will be built upon existing mechanism in Liberia,” the press release said.
The Liberian negotiating team was chaired by Agriculture Minister Florence Chenoweth, while the EU negotiating team was led by Julia Falconer.
