The Liberia Anti-Corruption Commission (LACC) and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission of Nigeria (EFCC) have agreed to forge a partnership of cooperation and collaboration in the fight against corruption in the two countries and the sub-region.
According to an LACC press statement published here by local media on Monday, the two institutions reached the agreement when a three-member delegation of the Liberia Anti-Corruption Commission, headed by its Chairperson, Frances Johnson Morris visited Nigeria recently to hold discussions with authorities of the EFCC.
The two institutions emphasized the need for similar partnerships among law enforcement agencies in Africa, particularly the West Africa sub-region in order to make the continent a ‘hell’ for corrupt leaders and unattractive for money launderers.
During the visit, the Executive Chairman of EFCC, Mrs. Farida Waziri informed the LACC delegation that within 15 months, the EFCC achieved over 80 convictions and recovered lost funds and assets worth more than $3 billion.
She disclosed that recently some bank officials were arrested, investigated and are being prosecuted for squandering depositors’ money. Madam Waziri expressed the hope that the LACC would learn from the structures put in place by her Commission to combat corruption.
In her remarks, the LACC Chairperson said her delegation would learn from the wealth of experience of the EFCC in combating corruption, as the LACC also strives to combat corruption in Liberia.
The LACC delegation toured facilities of the EFCC in both Abuja and Lagos.
