Liberian President Disappointed Over U.S’ Decision on AFRICOM

Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf has expressed disappointment over America’s decision to host the AFRICOM headquarters in Germany rather than Africa.

President Sirleaf said the true intent of AFRICOM was being misunderstood by many including Liberians, who see AFRICOM as a military force to be based in Liberia for military purposes.

She said contrary to this, AFRICOM is intended to conduct training of African armies to give them the capacity to intervene in conflicts around AFRICA.

U.S President George W. Bush recently announced that AFRICOM headquarters will be based in Germany, rather than in Africa.

President Sirleaf had expressed her government’s desire to host AFRICOM, and made several representations to US government officials on this issue.
