October 10, 2008
President Johnson Sirleaf has acknowledged that all Liberians suffered as a result of the civil crisis, and that it was important that all Liberians strive for a country of equal opportunities.
“All of us have sinned and come short of the glory of God, ” President Sirleaf said during a meeting Thursday with retired Armed Forces of Liberia General Charles Julu, a coup plot suspect whom she granted clemency early this year.
According to a presidential mansion press statement Friday, the meeting was aimed at strengthening ties between President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf and the people of Grand Gedeh which is the home of slain president Samuel Doe and retired General Julu.
President Johnson Sirleaf performed poorly in Grand Gedeh County during the 2005 elections.
The statement said the meeting was also meant to enable Retired General Charles Julu to express appreciation to President Johnson Sirleaf for the recent clemency she granted him.
Speaking further, President Johnson Sirleaf assured the people of Grand Gedeh that their county remains high on her priority list whenever she engages Liberia’s development partners for support.
The Liberian leader expressed the hope that all Liberians would still believe in the sincerity of her Government in reconciling and uniting the country.
In remarks, Retired General Julu thanked the President for his release from detention and praised her for working tirelessly in bringing peace to Liberia.
“I am convinced that your initiative has opened a great corridor for the respect of the rights of every citizen,” the General admitted, adding, “This is clearly manifested in the freedom of speech, freedom of movement of all citizens and the respect for the rule of law and due process.”
