Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf has welcomed the final and edited report of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC), saying the Commission has accomplished a great job.
A presidential mansion press statement issued Tuesday quotes the Liberian leader as lauding members of the commission for their “sense of duty in completing an enormous body of work”. The President’s remarks come following the release last week of the final and edited version of the report.
According to the press release, President Sirleaf acknowledged the importance of the work done by the TRC, and called on all Liberians to take their time and read the report.
She also called on legislators who are currently on their agricultural break to discuss every aspect of the report with their people in the counties and villages.
The President added that a process is underway to formulate the right strategy for implementing the report, taking into account that national reconciliation, peace and harmony are the cornerstone of any vibrant society.
The TRC report recommends the setting up of a war crimes court to try warlords who committed atrocities during the civil conflict, and calls for the barring of the Liberian leader and others from holding public office for 30 years, for their role in the Liberian conflict which lasted from December 1989 to 2003.
