Liberian Senator, 13 Others Charged with ’conspiracy to Murder’
June 18, 2008
The Liberian Police have charged Margibi Senator Roland Kaine and 13 others with ’conspiracy to murder’ in connection with the killing of an estimated 19 persons on a contested land on the bank of the Farmington River at the border between Margibi and Grand Bassa Counties.
Police sources told APA Tuesday that the 14 were charge following four days of preliminary investigation, adding that they are expected to appear at the Margibi Circuit Court on Tuesday.
Mr. Charles Bennie, a spokesman of the defunct rebel LURD who hired victims of the massacre to work on his farm, is yet to be charged, and has been released to his lawyer.
The leadership of the Liberian Senate last Thursday turned over Margibi Senator Kaine to the Liberian National Police in connection with the Margibi (centre) County massacre.
Recently, an estimated 36 persons hired by Mr. Bennie to work on his farm were attacked by unknown persons armed with AK-47 rifles, single-barrel shotguns and machetes.
Latest reports put the number of deaths at 19, but there are fears that more bodies could be found in the Farmington River where the victims were dumped after they were killed.
Only two out the 36 persons who were working on the farm have been seen alive.
