February 5, 2008
The first exhibition of French high education was inaugurated in Tripoli on Tuesday, as part of efforts to enhance the improved relations between Libya and France. The exhibition, which was opened on Tuesday, was to create opportunity for Libyan student to study in France and choose the university that they want to go to. As a result, the different French universities and other institutions of higher education are taking part in the exhibition.
Sources from the French embassy in Tripoli said Libyan French relations are based on friendship and partnership on both sides of the Mediterranean.
This improvement in relationship between the two countries has culminated in a visit to Libya by French President Nikolai Sarkozy last July and a return visit to France of Libyan leader Muammar Qaddafi in December, which the sources say affirmed the joint determination by the two countries to further the cooperation in different fields, including education.
During this year alone, Libya has sent 7000 students abroad to study in different universities in various parts of the world.
In Libya, there are more than 300,000 students majoring in different scientific fields of study in 14 universities throughout the country.
However, during the years when international sanctions were imposed on Libya, the government prohibited the teaching of foreign languages such as English and French in all Libyan schools. However, in recent years, students are being allowed to learn these languages in all educational stages.
