Libyan Leader Reiterates His Stance on African Unity

January 20, 2008

The Libyan leader, Mouamar Qaddafi is intensifying his contacts with other African leaders to unify their stance on African unity and to secure their full participation in the next African Union summit due be held in Addis Ababa by the end of January.

Libyan official sources said here that following Qaddafi’s return from Ouagadougou, the Burkinabe capital on Saturday, he is continuing his contacts with several other African leaders. According to official sources, both on Saturday and Sunday, he contacted Presidents Ismael Guileb of Djibouti, Essaias Afewerki of Eritrea, Ahmed Sambi of Comoro Island, Mohamed Ould El Sheikh Abdallah of Mauritania and Zein El Abedin of Tunisia. The preparations and arrangements underway to convene the next AU summit in Addis Ababa were some of the issues discussed during these contacts, the sources say.

The sources added that Qaddafi visited Burkina Faso where he attended a summit of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). During a meeting in Ouagadougou with women activists, he told them that African unity is an issue related to the fate of the next generation. He pointed out that the world map is changing and very soon no national (single) state can face by itself the challenges of the age.

Qaddafi told the women that the issue of African unity is an issue of the African citizen, the African woman and African peoples. Therefore he said they have to raise their voices to let the African leaders in Addis Ababa hear that unity must be achieved by whatever means necessary.
