Lords Resistance Army Leader Fails to Turn Up to Sign Peace Agreement in Uganda

November 30, 2008

It was another disappointing weekend for Uganda and the international community and particularly the UN when the elusive rebel Lords Resistance Army (LRA) leader Joseph Kony, failed again to turn up to sign the comprehensive peace agreement with the government.

Kony had committed himself to signing the peace agreement on November 29 at Ri-Kwangba near the Southern Sudan and DR Congo border in what the stake holders had seen as the last chance .

But his spokesman, Nyekorach Matsanga told reporters in Rikwangba where the signing was supposed to take place, that Kony “was in the vicinity coming to sign the peace agreement” but finally never showed up.

Mediators, diplomats and government representatives on Saturday evening retreated to Juba from Rikwangba in the hope that Kony will show up the next day, Sunday and sign the peace agreement.

The signing is expected to bring a peaceful end to the war in northern Uganda that has lasted for nearly two decades now.

By press time, the mediators and diplomats had returned to Rikwangba to witness the signing ceremony, but it was not clear whether Kony has shown up.

The government spokesman Maj. Chris Magezi said regional governments are ready to militarily deal with the LRA if Kony does not sign the peace agreement by the end of Sunday.

Among the waiting diplomats was the former Mozambique leader Joachim Chissano.
