Sarah Palin Creates More Search Interest Than Hurricane Gustav And the DNC Combined

Lycos, Inc. a provider of social publishing, media and search services, today announced the most popular Internet search terms and trends for the week ending Aug. 30, 2008. The news frenzy surrounding Republican presidential nominee John McCain’s choice of his vice presidential running mate has caused an avalanche of online interest in Alaska Governor Sarah Palin, surging 700 percent since last Friday.

  Search Gainers:

Palin generates more search activity this week than Hurricane Gustav and the Democratic National Convention combined. The most popular Sarah Palin search-related queries include: Sarah Palin family, Sarah Palin candidate, Sarah Palin down syndrome, and Sarah Palin pregnant daughter.

Meanwhile, search interest in actress Selena Gomez, star of the Disney Channel’s The Wizards of Waverly Place, triples following rumors Gomez is dating Nick Jonas, upstaging fellow Disney Channel star Miley Cyrus. Gomez has also just released her music video for “Tell Me Something I Don’t Know” from Another Cinderella Story.

Searches also spike this week for American Idol’s newest judge, Grammy-nominated songwriter Kara DioGuardi, up 525 percent. DioGuardi has jumped right into her judging duties, joining Paula Abdul, Randy Jackson and Simon Cowell for the New York City Idol tryouts this week. And online interest in actor David Duchovny rises 175 percent after the X Files star announced he has voluntarily entered treatment for sex addiction.
