Maï-Maï Group Disengages From North-Kivu Curfew Agreement

January 20, 2008

A Maï-Maï group called “Kifwafu” said it was not concerned with the Friday curfew agreement announced by the armed groups in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo,

In a declaration on Saturday, the armed group condemned the successive assaults perpetrated against their posts in the villages of Masisi, particularly in Mweso pilote, Mweso Bukama, and Kibashiro in the North-Kivu province.

“We thought we were dealing with honest people respectful of their commitments, but in the end, we realized we were fooled”, a Mai-Mai leader said on Radio Okapi station of the UN mission in DR Congo, urging his combatants that are still in the field to “remain vigilant”.

The coordination of Maï-Maï groups present at the Goma peace conference said it was not concerned by this disengagement, condemning however, those recent armed attacks in the east of the country.
