The Malawi Defence Force (MDF) has announced that it will send a contingent of 800 troops to Chad on a peacekeeping mission in September 2009.
MDF spokesman Colonel Clement Namangale said in the capital Lilongwe that Malawi has been requested by the UN Peace and Security Council to assist in the peacekeeping duties in Chad.
“The contingent will be the first group from Malawi to be part of the UN peacekeeping and they will stay there for a period of six months, before being relieved by a second contingent,” he said.
Currently, he said, 16 Peace Support Trainers from the USA are in the country for eight weeks to equip the Malawian troops with skills for the mission.
Malawi troops are currently serving in the DR Congo and Darfur (western Sudan) under the UN umbrella.
