125px-Flag_of_Malawi.svg_1The government of Malawi intends to modify the country’s national flag in order to align it with the current political and democratic realities of the country, the Secretary for Information Jeffrey Kanyinji said on Wednesday.

Kanyinji added that the modification of the national flag will also align it to the social and economic development achievements and aspirations that Malawians are experiencing and cherishing.

“It was necessary to adopt a national flag that represents the shared values, beliefs and aspirations of a nation, and that demonstrates the political, social and economic realities of a country,” he said.

He remarked that the flag was supposed to drive and move the national population towards a common purpose and goals.

The flag should therefore act as a unifying factor of citizens and display solidarity and patriotism of a nation’s populace, he added.

However some of the major features of the national flag adopted at independence, including the colors ; black, red and green and a rising sun would be retained to reflect the major background of the political history and cultural heritage of black Malawians and inalienable right and attachment to African renaissance.

Therefore, he said, the government was proposing to modify and re-design the national flag to adopt a white full rising sun instead of a just a rising sun, the red stripe should be at the top of the flag and the black stripe in the middle while the green stripe should remain at the bottom.

In addition, he said, the white full sun should be superimposed at the center of the black stripe with white sun rays spread at the other stripes.
