Malawi High Court Orders Registrar of Political Parties to Register the Peoples Party

| June 11, 2011 | 0 Comments

Flag of MalawiThe Malawi High Court has ordered the Registrar of Political Parties to register the Peoples Party (PP) belonging to Vice President Joyce Banda.

Earlier this year, the Registrar rejected the registration of the PP, arguing that its symbols resemble those of other existing parties.

But the VP challenged the Registrar in court in Lilongwe saying her party has satisfied legal requirements to be registered.

In her ruling, Justice Ivy Kamanga accused the Registrar of Political Parties of being discriminatory by refusing to register the party on the pretext that there are other parties with similar names.

“There are a lot of political parties with very similar names such as the Republican Party (RP) and the New Republican Party (NRP), which were never denied registration,” she told the court.

She therefore ordered the Registrar of the Political Parties to continue with their exercise of registering parties including that of VP Banda.
