You Are Here: Home » Africa » Malawi Meteorologists Predicting Mild to Moderate El Nino Phenomenon in 2009/10 Rainfall Season

125px-Flag_of_Malawi.svg3The department of Climate Change and Meteorological Services in Malawi have said in their rainfall seasonal forecast that the country is going to face an El Niño phenomenon during the 2009/ 2010 rainfall season.

El Niño conditions are usually associated with below?normal rainfall over a greater part of Southern Africa and above?normal over Eastern Africa.

The meteorological experts said this time around the country will receive mild to moderate El Niño.

Meteorological Services’ model output maps suggest in summary that during 2009/2010 rainfall season, a greater part of Malawi will experience normal rainfall totals.

However, just like in any El Niño season, extreme weather events such as floods and prolonged dry spells may occur in some places.

“Like most El Niño years, flood conditions are likely in northern Malawi and prolonged dry spells in the southern part of the country and the Central region will have transitional rainfall conditions,” said the experts
