Malawi President Bingu wa Mutharika and Callista Chimombo woke up Monday morning as fiance and fiancee following their colorful but private traditional engagement ceremony held at the New State House in the capital Lilongwe Sunday afternoon
The couple, looking immaculate in a white suit and red tie for the president and Chimombo decked out in red Valentine’s Day colors, were serenaded by relatives who exchanged a cock (rooster) from the man’s side) and a chicken from the woman’s side, as tradition demands for such occasions.
Mutharika’s side also brought household utensils such as hoes, machetes, baskets and brooms as gifts to the Chimombo’s, as one of showing their seriousness to work with the newly acquired family member.
A well attended reception with VIP only invitations followed the engagement ceremony in a giant tent set up outside the New State House grounds on the hill overlooking the capital.
Dining, wining and dancing to the local music, the First Couple is expected to get married on 1 May, according to a previous announcement.
Mutharika lost his wife Ethel to cancer in 2007 and Chimombo, a former cabinet tourism minister, has been a widow for years.
