Malawi President Bingu Wa Mutharika has signed the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Gender Protocol which seeks to promote and empower women.
He said in the commercial city of Blantyre during the signing ceremony that his government will continue to promote women by increasing their role in various decision making areas.
President Mutharika also said the Protocol will help Malawi and the SADC region to further advance the process of women’s emancipation through policies, laws, programs and projects.
“Let me remind all people that the promotion of women to various decision making positions will be based on merit, this means that we shall be taking quality and qualified women,” he said.
Malawi is the 13th country to sign the SADC Gender Protocol after South Africa, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Mozambique, Lesotho, Swaziland, Botswana, Tanzania, Mauritius, Rwanda, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
