Malawi President Names Zomba As New City

March 11, 2008

Malawi President Bingu wa Mutharika has declared that the former capital of colonial Malawi, Zomba, should now be designated as the newest city, and join Lilongwe, Blantyre and Mzuzu as the country’s only cities.

Zomba, a former capital when the country was known as Nyasaland, ceased to be the number one city in 1975 when the late president Kamuzu Banda moved the capital to Lilongwe, saying he wanted to spread development to the rest of the country by centrally locating the new capital.

Mutharika made the declaration during a political rally he addressed in Zomba Sunday afternoon, and he ordered his local government official to make sure “that everything that happens in the city should also be happen in Zomba because of its new status.”

Zomba hosts University of Malawi’s premier campus called Chancellor College, the Malawi National Examination Board which administers pre-university exams, the Malawi Institute of Education and the Malawi Army First Battalion, among others.

Hi! I’d like to learn more about Preschools in the Zomba, Malawi, area. I live in Michigan, USA. Tell me what types of kids are in the Preschools. And help me get information on one Preschool I know of that I’d like to know more about. Thanks.

Got something to say?
