Malawi President Bingu Wa Mutharika has officially unveiled the new flag of Malawi despite criticism from the country’s civil society organizations.
Speaking during the Unveiling Ceremony at the New State House in the capital Lilongwe, President Mutharika said his government will not regret modifying the country’s flag because it signifies the change in development for Malawi.
“We are not necessarily changing the flag as it has been reported by other quarters but we were modifying it to reflect the modern Malawi,” he said.
The Malawi president added that the colors are still the same, red, green and black but the sun rise which was previously half has become a full rising sun.
The sun is at the centre of the black stripe, encircled and surrounded by white sunrays that are not attached to the sun while the sunrays spread to all the three stripes of the flag.
The red stripe that was in the middle appears at the top, the black stripe is in the middle and the green stripe remains at the bottom.
“Malawians should be happy with the modification of the flag because the rising sun shows that Malawi is developed and it is still developing compared to the colonial era,” he observed.
Mutharika therefore reminded Malawians not to live permanently in the past because it is over.
The head of state recently assented to the Protected Flags, Emblems and Names Amendment Bill after Parliament authorized government to go ahead in modifying the flag.
