Malawi President Pardons Over 200 Prisoners
July 16, 2008
Malawi President Bingu wa Mutharika on Tuesday pardoned over 200 prisoners from the country’s prisons as part of the country’s 44th independence anniversary celebrations, APA has learned.
Secretary for Home Affairs and Internal Security, Martin Mononga, said on Tuesday in Lilongwe that the president had freed only those prisoners who have served at least half of their sentences and had minor offenses.
“These are the people who showed good behavior and were not convicted of serious offenses while serving their sentences in various prisons of the country,” he said.
Last year during the same period, over close to 500 prisoners received a presidential pardon.
Malawi celebrated its independence day on 6 July.
