Malawian president, Bingu wa Mutharika, who is expected to take over the chairmanship of the African Union arrived late on Thursday in Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa to to attend the African Union (AU) Commission summit.
The president is the first African leader to arrive for the summit, which will be held this weekend at the heads of states and government level.
Mutharika however is expected to make a strong statement at the summit regarding his chairmanship following Libya’s interest to stay for another term.
Many agree that Malawi representing southern African region is expected to take over the chairmanship.
It was reported that the gathering of African Foreign ministers didn’t raise this issue.
The South African region has already extended its support to Malawi to take over the chairmanship.
The country has been lobbying over the past years to take over the chairmanship.
The on going African Union (AU) Commission summit is being held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia under the theme, “Information and communication Technologies-ICT-in Africa ; Challenges and prospects for Development.
