Malawian Minister of Local Government Says It is Time for Africans to Learn From Each Other
The Malawian Minister of Local Government who is currently in Lesotho, Grace Maseko has said it is time for Africans to learn from each other, pointing out that this was the reason she was in the country.
Speaking at the meeting with the Deputy Prime Minister in the capital, Maseru on Monday,s he said they have worked well to decentralize services in other ministries, but lag behind in the Ministry of Public Works. She said they were prepared to learn more from Lesotho in this division.
“We are heading for national as well as council elections in 2014. We need to learn more about the roles of the councilors so that they can play their roles well,” she said.
Maseko pointed out that they intend to learn how the Ministry of Local Government interacts with the Ministry of Agriculture as they witness a relationship which is working well.
Welcoming the delegation, the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Local Government and Chieftainship Affairs Mothejoa Metsing said decentralization was important as it allows people to work hard towards reaching their goal.
He noted that the visit of the Malawian Minister of Local Government and her delegation will assist both countries to come up with best decentralization plans and hoped that they will be able to exchange ideas that will assist to improve the way they do things in both countries.
“We need to empower women in local councils. This can be done by ensuring that there is a significant representation of women in the councils,” he added.
He pointed out that as hard as it maybe, the Ministry of Local Government is working tirelessly to ensure that all the services in other ministries are decentralized.
The Malawian delegation will be in the country on a study tour for a period of four days departing on February 6.
