Malawi’s Deputy Minister for Agriculture and Food Security Margaret Mauwa has said that the government has authorized the National Food Reserve Agency (NFRA) to export almost 300,000 metric tonnes of maize grain to Zimbabwe.
Mauwa told journalists in the capital Lilongwe on Friday that Malawi would like to offload the surplus maize it realized last year and fill in this year’s surplus.
“Malawi has enough maize in its reserves such that the surplus can be sold to any other country. Zimbabwe was the first country to request Malawi to sell them maize,” she said.
She added that the export of maize to Zimbabwe was not the first time, Malawi did the same by exporting almost 400,000 metric tonnes of maize in 2007.
Malawi realized almost 800,000 and 1 million metric tonnes surplus maize in 2009 and 2010 respectively
