Man Arrested At Adelaide Airport for Offensive Pornography
February 12, 2008
Customs crackdown on attempts to smuggle objectionable pornography into Australia through Adelaide has resulted in an arrest of a Malaysian national over the weekend.
The 41-year-old man is due to face Adelaide Magistrates Court today (11 February).
The man was stopped and questioned by Customs officers when he arrived at Adelaide International Airport on a flight from Singapore on Saturday (9 February).
During a baggage examination, officers searched the man’s laptop and allegedly found objectionable material depicting abhorrent sexual acts.
Customs National Manager Investigations, Richard Janeczko, said that people arriving in Australia at smaller international airports were subject to the same level of scrutiny as those arriving through larger airports.
“This is the third person arrested and charged by Customs investigators for attempting to import objectionable material through Adelaide in the past week,” Mr Janeczko said.
“Customs is committed to detecting attempts to import objectionable pornography, and will investigate and prosecute those attempts to breach Australia’s strict border controls.”
The man was arrested by Customs investigators and charged with importing prohibited goods in contravention of Regulation 4A of the Customs (Prohibited Imports) Regulations 1956 and making a false declaration to Customs.
The maximum penalty for offenses involving objectionable pornography is $110,000 and where child pornography is involved there is a fine of $275,000 and/or 10 years imprisonment.
