A 49-year-old Surry Hills man will appear in Downing Centre Local Court, New South Wales, today, after being charged by the Australian Federal Police (AFP) for possessing $119,400, believed to be proceeds of crime.
On 5 December 2009, the man arrived at Sydney Airport, after being on a flight from Melbourne.
Acting upon information, AFP officers searched his luggage and found a shoe box containing $119,400 in $50 and $100 notes. This currency was seized and after a subsequent investigation, the man was charged with possessing money suspected of being proceeds of crime, contrary to section 400.9 of the Criminal Code Act 1995.
The maximum penalty for this offense is two years imprisonment and/or a $5,500 fine.
