Man Flown to Hospital After Falling From Torbay Cliff Path
August 10, 2008
Brixham Coastguard coordinated the rescue early this morning of a 38 year old man who fell from a cliff path in Torquay and was heard to fall by a member of the public who was night fishing at the time.
Coastguard Rescue Teams from Torbay and Berry Head were immediately sent to the area and the RNLI’s Torbay all weather and inshore lifeboats were also asked to respond. A rescue helicopter form the Royal Naval Air Station at Culdrose was also scrambled.
The first informant had told the Coastguard that he’d heard the casualty fall and shout for help, and that he was in severe pain after hitting solid rock falling from the path.
The lifeboat put its own smaller Y boat into the water with a paramedic on board. Upon arrival at the foot of the cliff, the rescuers found a man who had been drinking heavily and had fallen from the cliff path and badly hurt himself. Two Coastguard cliff men was lowered to the casualty and along with the lifeboatmen prepared the man for airlift in atrocious conditions with heavy wind driven rain rebounding off the cliff.
After assessing his condition and the nature of his injuries it was felt that the casualty needed to be urgently airlifted to Derriford Hospital, along with the paramedic who was attending him at the bottom of the cliff. An ambulance was called to meet the aircraft at the landing site at Plymouth Hoe.
