The Superintendent of the northern Liberian County of Lofa has disclosed that talks have been initiated among officials of Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia to further bring together the Mano River Union countries in order to enhance and sustain security in this sub-region.
Mr.Kortimai told APA in the provincial capital Voinjama located about 280 kilometers from the capital Monrovia on Saturday that during the first meeting held in Guinea for three days last week, participants vowed to protect their common borders.
Mr Kortimai said in the resolution signed at the end of the conference, the parties agreed not to go back to their ugly past, and to climax the conference in Liberia, with the presidents of Liberia and Sierra Leone and the head of state of Guinea in attendance.
He said the conference to be held early next year, would be climaxed with the planting of a ‘Peace Tree’ by the three heads of state.
Liberia, Guinea and Sierra Leone were at loggerheads during the Liberian conflict which lasted from 1989 to 2003, with Guinea and Sierra Leone blaming Liberia for cross border attacks into their territories, while Liberia blamed Guinea for allowing the rebel LURD to launch its incursions into Liberia from its territory in 2002 and Sierra Leone for assisting the first rebels under the command of the late General Quiwonkpa to launch an incursion into Liberia in 1985.
