Masked Men have Shot an Egyptian Soldier Guarding the Border with Israel
November 14, 2008
Unknown armed and masked men on Thursday shot and wounded an Egyptian soldier on the border with Israel, south of Rafah city, about 550 km north-east of Cairo.
The soldier, 22-year-old Mohammed Mustafa Bandari, was admitted to hospital for treatment in the nearby town of El Arish.
Security sources said Bandari was shot in his left foot fired by the unidentified men from a short distance. The attackers fled in a pickup.
The sources said investigations were under way to determine if the incident was a result of a smuggling operation or the escalation of the conflict between Sinai Bedouins and Egyptian police.
Bedouin elders are mediating to restore weapons and equipment seized by some Bedouins from security forces in the area over the last few days.
The parliamentary defense and national security committee will meet next Tuesday to discuss the clashes between the Bedouins and police in Sinai.
