Mauritania’s Ruling Body Forms First Cabinet After Coup
September 1, 2008
Mauritania’s ruling High State Council that deposed former President Sidi Mohamed Ould Cheikh Abdallahi in a recent coup, has announced the formation of its first government. The composition of this much awaited Cabinet was published by the High Council’s presidency in a statement issued in the state-run Mauritanian News Agency (AMI) shortly after midnight (local time).
Moulaye Ould Mohamed Laghdhaf, the country’s former ambassador to Brussels was already appointed Prime Minister on 15 August 2008. This new team of technocrats, who are not known on the political scene, is composed of 28 members -22 ministers, 3 State secretaries and 3 commissioners-.
The leading opposition party, the “Rassemblement des forces démocratiques” (Rally of Democratic forces, RFD) led by Ahmed Ould Daddah has no representative in the new government, in protest against the High Council’s refusal to limit the transitional period and the vagueness about its members’ intent to seek election.
