125px-Flag_of_Mauritania.svgThe Mauritanian government has decided to open the public media, namely the Mauritanian News Agency (AMI), Radio Mauritania and Television Mauritania ( TVM) to the opposition, a first in the history of the country.

According to AMI, the Mauritanian president, Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz has instructed the government to promote freedom of expression and the emergence of a democratic culture, in particular through the opening of the public media to contradictory debates and the conduct of socio-educational opportunities in order to change positively mentality and programs.

President Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz has also, according to the agency, called to mark the 61st anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and considered the requirement to make the promotion and protection of these rights a priority in government action.

Discussing the issue with journalists and foreign correspondents, the Minister of Communication, Mr. Mohamed Abdallahi Ould Boukhary said that the opening of the public media to the opposition is designed to promote democratic culture in the country.

He added that the media are now opened to anyone to express themselves freely in accordance with law texts governing the country.
