Mauritanian Junta Appoints New Prime Minister

The High State Council in Mauritania has appointed the ambassador of Mauritania to Belgium, Moulaye Ould Mohamed Laghdhaf, as the new Prime Minister, APA learned Thursday in Nouakchott.

The Mauritanian Information Agency (AMI) broke the news quoting a press release from the presidency of the High State Council which rules the country since it overthrew former president Sidi Ould Abdalahi on 6 August.

Ould Mohamed Laghdhaf, who is known for being close to the chairman of the junta General Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz, had been ambassador to the European Union since late 2006.

Before his diplomatic career, Ould Mohamed Laghdhaf belonged to the political party, the Rally of Democratic Forces of Ahmed Ould Daddah.

Ahmed Ould Daddah recently averred that he supported the military junta.

Aged about 50, the new Mauritanian Prime Minister is from the eastern part of the country.
