Mauritanian Leader Threatens to Dissolve Parliament
July 3, 2008
Mauritanian President Sidi Mohamed Ould Sheikh Abdallahi has threatened to dissolve the Parliament if MPs endorse their vote of no confidence against the government.
In a nationwide address on Tuesday, he called on rebel MPs to reconsider their position about the no confidence vote.
Ould Sheikh Abdallahi further renewed his confidence in ’the senior officers” some of whom are accused of backing the MPs who filed the petition-most of whom are from the ruling National Pact for Democracy and Development (PNDD-ADIL) led by current Prime Minister Yahaya Ould Ahmed El Waghev.
While recognizing the MPs’ right to topple the government, Ould Sheikh Abdallahi questioned the “real motive” for this move.
On Monday, 39 MPs had filed a vote of no confidence against the government of Ould El Waghev who was appointed less than two months ago.
The Mauritanian leader expressed surprise at such measure against a government that is yet to unveil its program in Parliament.
The vote requires a simple majority of 48 MPs (out of 95) to be approved; a majority that seems to be largely won unless last minute developments occur before the vote.
The opposition Democratic Forces’ Rally (RFD) of Ahmed Ould Daddah (18 MPs) had already expressed support to the vote.
