Mauritanian Police Arrest Over 220 Sub-Saharan Migrants

Mauritanian security men in Lagoueira on Wednesday, arrested about 199 migrants from sub-Saharan Africa while attempting to reach the Canary Islands, in Spain, sources confirmed here Thursday.

The illegal migrants were divided into two groups, one comprising 139 people which left Ziguinchor, south of Senegal 15 days ago, while the second group consisting of 60 members awaited at The Gambia’s Bani resort for 3 days.

The two boats that were carrying them run out of fuel off Lagoueira, north-west of Nouadhibou.

A third group of 21 people had been arrested the previous day by the Mauritanian gendarmerie after it was alerted by the Moroccan coast guards.

Of the total of the 3 groups of illegal migrants, there were 87 Senegalese, 63 Guineans, 32 Bissau-Guineans, 17 Gambians, 12 Malians, and 7 Ghanaians, in addition to other west African nationals.

The illegal migrants are awaiting at the Nouadhibou’s Reception center while awaiting deportation.
