A Mauritanian policeman was killed Thursday night by two people suspected of being members of Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQMI) in the region of Legsseiba, near the north bank of the River Senegal, a reliable source told APA.
Mauritanian security services have been looking for two suspected terrorists who were spotted Thursday in the area where police units were dispatched to arrest them.
The policemen fell into an ambush by two the AQMI militants who shot them with machine-guns, killing one instantly before resuming their flight.
The terrorists are reported to be hiding in dense vegetation and rice fields to escape reinforcements of the police and army which arrived on the scene.
It is even feared that they manage to cross the river to Senegal to prepare for a return to their rear bases in northern Mali.
