Mauritius: Hotels Waste Huge Amounts of Energy, Says Official
August 4, 2008
Mauritius’s president of the Environment Commission of the Hotel and Restaurant Owners Association said on Sunday that hotels in the country are wasting huge amounts of energy.
In his opening speech at a two-day workshop, Rolf Schmid said the hotels should look for alternatives to fossil fuel, turn to renewable energy and reduce energy consumption.
He said hotels and restaurants will not be able to raise their prices each time the price of oil increases on the world market and should adopt remedial measures and solutions.
He said that in the immediate future solar energy will be the only practical energy renewable project for the hotel industry in Mauritius as the majority of hotels are in the coasts where the sun shines almost the year round.
He said his group is already recycling some 500 liters of used vegetable oil weekly for use in the company’s cars and the hotel is saving $15,000 yearly on car fuel.
