Mauritius Launches New Electronic Air Cargo Project
September 22, 2008
Mauritius will be the first country in southern Africa to implement a pilot project for the air cargo industry aimed at simplifying the cargo business and processes, according to a manager at Air Mauritius, the national airline.
Shiv Patten, who is the airline’s Cargo, Hub and Network manager, told journalists on Sunday that the project, which started last week, is in line with the International Air Transport Association e-freight program.
The project has been set up to improve service and transparency and to speed up processing at customs through the electronic transmission of all freight data.
He said freight export of the island amounts to some $15 million while the overall freight trade amounts to some $50 million annually.
He said the implementation of such a system will allow huge savings for Air Mauritius and its partners.
