University of Mauritius students holding a bachelor’s degree in medicine will be able to study at Bordeaux University Health Centre in France following an agreement signed on Tuesday by the two institutions.
Health Minister Rajesh Jeetah said Mauritius is in great need of specialists in the field of diabetes, chikungunya, dengue and the A flu H1N1 (swine fever).
The agreement will give a boost to the project of making of Mauritius the medical hub for southern Africa.
Bordeaux University Health Centre director general Alain Heriaud said the university will allow Mauritius students to study for a medical doctor’s certificate and to continue their studies to become medical specialists.
He said in future the medical course at the University of Mauritius will be extended from three to four years to award the students a master’s degree in medicine and the students will then have to spend only two years to finish their studies at the Bordeaux University Health Centre.
Lecturers from the Bordeaux University Health Centre will be attached to the University of Mauritius, he added.
