June 16, 2008

In the context of the International Day of the African Child which is being celebrated Monday, the Mauritius Family Planning and Welfare Association (MFPWA), in collaboration with the Industrial and Vocational Training Board is launching a sensitization campaign on the responsible attitude of young people towards sex.

In a communiqué issued by the MFPWA in Port Louis, the capital, Vidya Charan, the director notes that the objectives of the campaign will be to promote access to information on the need for safe and sensible reproductive and sexual health.

Charan adds that such social scourges as undesirable pregnancies, abortions, sexually transmitted diseases, prostitution and drug addiction have seen a rise in Mauritius.

The director of the MFPWA further indicates that according to a study conducted by the ministry of Health, 40% of all HIV positive people are between the ages of 15 to 29. These figures, she adds, are alarming and it is high time that action was taken before the disease spreads more widely.

For its part, the ministry of Women’s Rights and Child Development, together with the National Children’s Council, is organizing a series of activities Monday at the National Women’s Development Centre in Phoenix, 15 km from Port Louis.
