Mauritius Police to Launch a Crime Prevention Week

June 13, 2008

The Mauritius police chief Iswar Ramparsad, on Friday announced that the police force is launching from next Monday a Crime Prevention Week to sensitize the public on the measures to be taken in order to decrease the rising number of crimes taking place on the island.

Ramparsad, who was speaking to the press at his office at the police headquarters in the capital Port Louis indicated that the Crime Prevention Unit (CPU), the Family Protection Unit (FPU), the Anti-Drug and Smuggling Unit (ADSU) and the Special Mobile Force will be taking part. Two booklets on security precautions to be taken both in residences and outdoors will be launched and will be distributed throughout the island, he added.

He further added that an exhibition will be held at the Rajiv Gandhi Science Centre in the capital as from next week, during there will be daily talks by members of ADSU in the fight against drugs.

Ramparsad observed that it is inconceivable that a small island like Mauritius has more than 25, 000 hard drug addicts.

The police chief pointed out that there has been a spate of ill treatment of elderly persons and that the FPU will give lectures in village council halls on the prevention of aggression on the elderly.

Ramparsad also noted that more than 100 pedestrians have died on the roads since the beginning of the year. He stated that with approximately 320, 000 vehicles using the 2021 km of roads, the risk of accidents are very high in Mauritius.

Most of these accidents have been caused by drunk drivers and by speeding vehicles, he added. The CPW will also target pedestrians and a film will be screened in village councils to show to people the safe way to walk on the roads especially where there are no pavements.
