A two-day workshop on the setting up of a common educational project to inform and educate the youth against sexually transmitted infections (STI) and AIDS entered its final day on Friday in Quatre Bornes, 20 km from the capital Port Louis.
The workshop is being held by the Indian Ocean Commission (IOC) and Mauritius Family Planning and Welfare Association (MFPWA) with some 24 young participants from four member countries of the IOC — Madagascar, Comoros, Seychelles Islands and Mauritius.
In his opening speech, Renaud Ng Man Sung, of the Project AIDS in the IOC said the project targeting the youth was urgently need as their lifestyle in the IOC countries is similar and they represent the most vulnerable segment of society.
Sung said the IOC and the MFPWA have signed an agreement for funds amounting to 50,000 euros to be used to formulate policies and strategies on an Information, Education and Communication Project for schools, colleges and universities of the region.
The agreement includes the development of a sex and family education module which will be integrated in the curriculum of educational institutions and to train a pool of 100 teacher trainers.
In his message to the workshop the general secretary of the IOC, Monique Andreas Esoavelomandroso, said that children of the IOC countries need to acquire some knowledge that will allow them to face the problems related to HIV/AIDS.
