More than 400 Indian specialist doctors have applied for work in Mauritius following a recruitment exercise held by the Mauritian government in India.
Health Ministry sources said on Tuesday there is a great lack of specialists and the situation has become so acute that the government is now compelled to immediately call for the help of more than 100 Indian specialists.
The sources said many specialists have recently left Mauritius to look for greener pastures in Canada and Australia.
Specialist doctors will be recruited in such areas as general medicine, neonatal medicine, kidney transplantation surgery, plastic and cardiac surgery, anesthesia, ophthalmology, and pediatrics, the sources aver.
