125px-Flag_of_Mauritius.svg4The University of Mauritius (UoM) is to introduce a course which will lead to a BSc in Forensic Science.

Speaking during a seminar at the UoM in Reduit, 15km from Port Louis organized by the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) with the collaboration of the British Staffordshire University (BSU) on the application of medico-legal sciences in police inquiries, Vidhu Madhub-Dassyne, Chief Forensic Scientist declared here that the introduction of the subject will facilitate criminal investigations.

She added that the aim will be to develop competences in medico-legal aspects as it has been noted that forensic science is continuously improving and that specialists are very few.

Vidhu Madhub-Dassyne declared that skin tissue and DNA analysis will form part of the studies.

For his part, David Flatman-Fairs, Senoir Lecturer of the Science faculty at the BSU elaborated on the importance of using forensic medicine during criminal inquiries.

Forensic Science, he added, is very important when the police has to determine the time of death of victims.

The seminar is being organized in the context of the project of the European Union : Developing Education, Skills and Capacity in Forensic Awareness, in order to develop such skills in the countries of the Southern African Development Community (SADC).

The program is being financed by the European Union to the tune of €481, 000 and encompasses three universities, namely the British Staffordshire University, the University of Mauritius and the Jamaican University of Technology.

Police officers of the Scene of Crime Office and employees of the FSL are taking part in the seminar.
