The first batch of some 172 Mauritians on Saturday received their travel documents after having been selected from among more than 1200 applicants in the context of the Circular Migration Program set up by the Canadian government.
This initiative is the result of a partnership between the International Organization for Migration (IMO), the Canadian Employment Bureau, the Empowerment Program, the Ministries of Labor and that of Finance. The workers have been recruited to work in the production unit of Maple Leaf Consumer Foods Limited in Alberta and Manitoba in the poultry and cooked meat departments.
Speaking to the recruits while handing them their documents on Saturday at the Labourdonnais hotel in Port Louis, the capital, Rama Sithanen, the minister of Finance explained that such a program will improve the living conditions of the workers and give them an opportunity to start a small business once they come back home after their stay in Canada.
Sithanen disclosed that the recruiting agents who were in Mauritius to interview potential workers had informed him that the contracts of those workers could be renewed after the 3-year work period, provided that their conduct and work was satisfactory and that they had not indulged in any dubious activity in Canada.
Canada, he opined, is interested in Mauritian workers as most of them are literate and bi-lingual.
Sithanen indicated that Mauritius is one of the few countries in the Third World where Canada, which lacks skilled workers, is recruiting people and added that recruitment of more workers will depend on the performance of those who are now leaving.
The IOM was established in 1951 and is an inter-governmental organization which promotes humane and orderly migration.

Why a candidate who have done a degree is not eligible for such program?
Even if a candidate have a degree, he can have experience in difficulties of work and he can have pass through similar work to IOM program.
Why do this candidate have the least chance to be selected for an IOM program?

Mauritius Workers Leave for Canada Under Special Migration Program
I am flabergasted learning about such an existing program between Canada and Mauritius. I have always been an advocate for a progressive Mauritius. This is a very good thing for the Mauritian population. Never mind about degrees and higher level of academics … Canada got plenty of them locally, so why bother.!!! . What Canada needs are skilled workers who are good performers with a fine ethic of living to intergrate within the Canadian society. Canada is one of the best place to be on this planet. As long as anyone meets the Canadian immigration credentials will be a prosperous individual on this globe. You can’t beat Canadian living… one of the best in the world. However, I have to disagree with Rama Sitanen about hoping the Mauritians actually migrating to Canada will come back to Mauritius and get involve in small busineses…no…no..no. Once they get the taste of north american living, there is no way for them to go back to Mauritius.!! #$%% … for a vacation …maybe.
I will strongly encourage the younger Mauritian genaration into learning good trades/skills in regards to what we need to make this planet comfortable to live in and get some certification to go with it.
Plumbers, Electricians, Bricklayers, Carpenters, Painters, Building Engineers,
Drainage/Sewer sys. Engineers, Meat & Poultry workers, Iron workers ….. Welcome to Canada…. CANADA needs you and good luck in all your endeavours
I am very much interested in going to canada. Just want to know when is the next batch you are sending to Canada. I have studied till SC. Please reply

HELLO,
I`M A MAURITIAN I FOUND THIS WEB SITE ON INTERNET
I WANT TO GO TO WORK IN CANADA I HAVE A LOT OF EXPERIENCE IN DIVERSE SECTORS PLEASE IF YOU NEED ME I AM A GOOD WORKER
I think it’s a good thing for Mauritians to go in foreign countries and acquire experience.
What I cannot understand is- why do they have to stay in these countries if they have been sent there to come back and develop Mauritius. If our skill workers migrate to other countries, what will happen to us?
they will only return to claim for whatever …………………….by saying that they are born Mauritians but where wre they when we are all staying here and try to develop Mauritius – OUR COUNTRY –
I do think that a foreigner will always be a foreigner even if he died and is buried in this country of adoption.
Cheers
It’s a great opportunity that mauritian people should seize esp.young people as
Mauritius is in need of high calibre workforce in order to meet fierce competition on the overall market.
i think a contract of three years is more for a muritian to go. Every people who go there become arrogant n they stay there.
already apply through empowerment programme for production worker in mapleleaf and had done all interview and been selected but i am still waiting for my departure date.i have been selected for edmonton poultry.

hi…
i would like to know how to apply for the next batch, my husband has lots of years of experience in carpenter… plzz do tell how can i apply for this program, i look for it on the website but i could not find it… thankss
its no really to say mauritian living on the empowerment program are having a wonderfil life. the program is really bogus. as I am working actually in an abattage in trois rivieres quebec. its really hard to save 150$ a week as we are earning 250$ a week. as our company is cheating us on the house rent as we pay 1340$ per month and we are living 2 man in a room 4 in house of 2 rooms. each paying 335$ per month. to be noted that the rent of such a house is only 500$ per month with electricity. our company is making us pay more than twice.smokers and non smokers all mix together. we pay too many taxes even taxe for future parent which unnecessary as our wife are is in mauritius. so how can webecome a parent here.
I am a cook in mauritius , currently working in Le Prince Maurice. I am seeking the opportunity to go and work in canada.
Kindly advise, i have done form 4 , ntc 3 in food production , diploma and advanced diploma in hotel management and work in the uk for 6 years.
Hope to get a positive response
I am an hsc holder and working as administrative supervisor. I would like to know what are my chances to go and work in canada?

hi am am very interested to go to canada,Just want to know how to applied to go to canada this interest me a lot. Please do consider my submittion and hope to receive a good response
I got a degree in Library and information science. Currently am working in the Public Sector. Want to know if am eligible to have a job in my field.
Actually heard about Canadian Immigration dept looking for Mauritian as skill workers lack in Canada…seems very strange that in such a big and developed country, skilled workers are lacking…why not say nobody is actually very willing to work there cause of the cold…or maybe the real true skilled workers are asking for too much…or simply have they all been sent to the NASA…
Actually me too I ve always dreamed Canada for I have heard a lot of Mauritians speaking good of all those who migrate there…well of course who will remain here and who would go if all people are lured by new adventures and money gain….
I have studied till HSC in Mauritus till 1998 and I am in fact very interested into becoming a good collaborator in industrial plants….I already studied science and Tech in Italy…where I had my mum.’s support and my own hard work. Actually I am planning to do my Msc in Chemistry and Environmental science…in Mauritius… as I came back last year…to settle with my family in my Heavenly Motherland. But I would nevertheless like to go to Canada to learn more about Energy and Science and after three years like to come back Mauritius to share the new and innovative solutions to Energy and Environmental problems actually hitting mauritus and the world.
I don’t know if it’s better to go this year or in 2 years after the Msc.
I really hope Canada will always be an open door for all those who want to better the lives of those living here.
I would like to know more about the opportunities that exists for phD’s and other students…and skilled workers in the social and science field.
How is the exact process to apply for such visa’s…that are actually being discussed in the news (march 2010)
Thanks for all

We are the first batch which were sent by the government in March 2008,I can say we have been very successful.Almost everybody from this batch is a resident now and nobody wants to go back to Mauritius except for vacations, lol. As long as you are a hardworker and behave correctly in Canada, you will be successful. My friends and I,would like to thank the Govt Of Mauritius and the IOM.It is true that our good conduct “a ouvert la porte aux autres”,but some guys who came to work in Bakery section”a brouille la piste”,very bad indeed.I would like to recommend to our government officers while selecting candidates in the future, please give more chance to the needy, those already in the public sector please stay home, lol.Anyway Mauritians are doing good in Edmonton, some will be occupying positions at supervisory and managerial levels shortly.Take care guys. From Mauritians in Edmonton, the coldest place on earth,lol..
