Flag of EnglandThe Mayor of London is set to lead this year’s Pride London celebrations as thousands of revelers take to the streets of central London on Saturday. One of the biggest events in the world marking the contribution of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender communities, the Mayor will help kick off proceedings when the parade sets off ahead of a sea of colorful floats and banners.

Kulveer Ranger, the Mayor’s Transport Advisor, is also taking part in this year’s event and will be one of the speakers at the festival in Trafalgar Square.

The Mayor of London Boris Johnson said: ‘This weekend, the streets of London will be thronged with people from all walks of life taking part in one of the most highly anticipated events of the year. I am pleased to support our city’s Pride celebrations and proud of London’s reputation as a place where you can be yourself.

‘From poet laureates to politicians and pop stars to rugby players, there’s an increasing confidence to be open about your sexuality. Nowhere is this more evident than in London, which is home to one of the largest lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans communities in the world.

‘ Everybody has the right to live their life as they wish, free from persecution and abuse, and my office is working with the community, the police and other partners to ensure that irrespective of your sexuality all Londoners are able to participate fully in the life of the capital.’

This year, for the first time, festival-goers will be able to buy new pin badges that have just been launched by London 2012 in support of the LGBT community. The badges will be on sale at London Pride on Saturday July 3rd and will also be available from the London 2012 online shop.  The badges are one of a series of badges being produced over the next year to highlight inclusivity at the 2012 Games. The others will celebrate belief, age, disability, gender and ethnicity.
