Mbeki Goes to Zimbabwe in a Bid to Salvage Stalled Talks
July 30, 2008
South African President Thabo Mbeki was expected in Zimbabwe on Wednesday to brief President Robert Mugabe on the progress of the South Africa-based talks to end the political crisis in the country.
Mugabe said Mbeki would jet into the country in Wednesday afternoon for consultations with leaders of Zimbabwe’s three main political parties following adjournment of the crisis talks in the South African capital of Pretoria.
Speaking for the first time on the country’s political situation since signing a memorandum of understanding with leaders of the two factions of the opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) on July 21, Mugabe said the South African-mediated talks were “progressing well”.
“I shall hear today when President Mbeki comes on the progress made so far,” Mugabe told business leaders in the Zimbabwe capital on Wednesday.
Mbeki would also meet with Morgan Tsvangirai and Arthur Mutambara, leaders of the rival MDC factions.
