McCain Wins Republican Presidential Nomination
March 4, 2008
After being considered out of the race just a few months ago and denied the nomination eight years ago, U.S. Senator John McCain - in a remarkable comeback - won four states Tuesday to secure the Republican Party’s nomination for president.
McCain won the delegate-rich states of Ohio and Texas and won in the smaller states of Vermont and Rhode Island.
At a rally in Dallas, Texas, McCain thanked his supporters, saying that he is pleased to have won enough delegates Tuesday to be the Republican presidential nominee. McCain is scheduled Wednesday to go to the White House, where he will be endorsed by President Bush.
The veteran Arizona lawmaker, who was behind in the polls and faced staff and financial difficulties in his campaign, won the endorsement of his main rival - former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee - who announced in Texas Tuesday night that he is dropping out of the race and calling on the Republican Party to unite.
