McCain Wins Republican Presidential Primary in New Hampshire

January 8, 2008

Senator John McCain of Arizona has claimed victory in the Republican presidential primary in New Hampshire. But the Democratic race between Senators Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton remains too close to call. VOA National correspondent Jim Malone reports from Bedford, New Hampshire.
McCain capped a remarkable political comeback with a convincing victory over former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney. “I am past the age when I can claim the noun kid, no matter what adjective precedes it. But tonight, we sure showed them what a comeback looks like!,” he said.

In addition to Republican voters, McCain benefited from the support of political independents, who can vote in either party’s presidential primary in New Hampshire.

McCain’s victory is a major setback for former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney, who had hoped to rebound after a disappointing second place finish in the Iowa caucuses last week.

Former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee finished third in New Hampshire, followed by former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani, Texas Congressman Ron Paul and former Senator Fred Thompson of Tennessee.
